Health Benefits to Meditation
Meditation has several health benefits for the body, mind, and soul. As I do more research and read, I am learning that meditation is being recommended more often by professionals like healthcare and educational industries.
1. Reduce Stress
Meditation helps to lower Cortisol Levels. When the body is under stress it goes into "fight or flight" mode. The adrenal glands release a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol can cause the blood vessels to constrict, the heart to pump harder and faster, and your thoughts to race. This can contribute to Insomnia, Inflammatory illnesses, weight gain, fatigue, and infection. When the body is under stress, this can raise glucose levels as well. Regular meditation can help the body and mind to relax naturally lowering these cortisol levels.
2. Improves sleep
Meditation has been proven to increase the amount of time sleep and the effectiveness of sleep. Studies show that people that meditation regularly fall asleep quicker and do not get up as much in the middle of the night.
3. Reduce Pain
The perception of pain is unique to the mind. Stress and anxiety are factors that can increase pain. Meditation and relaxation can help the brain process its perception of pain.
4. Reduces Blood Pressure
Increased stress levels causes the blood vessels to constrict and the heart to pump harder. When the body is in a relaxed state it releases nitric acid which dilates the blood vessels and helps the heart to pump blood throughout the body efficiently. This helps to lower blood pressure levels.
5. Improves mood and decreases anxiety and depression.
6. Improves focus and the ability to work under stress.
7. Increases awareness of the unconscious mind.
8. Helps with creativity.
9. Meditation also helps improve relationships.
Meditation has several more benefits. The importance of meditation can actually improve health and add to a better quality of life.
